FAQ

What is your teaching experience?

I’ve been teaching since 2018. I started my career as a private tutor in Greece, working with Middle School students. In 2021, I began teaching Greek as a target language on a freelance basis. By 2023, teaching Greek online had become my full-time job. In 2024, I founded my small education business to better assist my students.

Every student is unique, but here are the most common types of students I’ve helped:

  • Greek Diaspora: I’ve helped students of Greek diaspora reconnect with their mother tongue well into their adult years.
  • Academic Success: I’ve guided PhD students from prestigious universities to pass their language exams with flying colors.
  • Personal Connections: I’ve assisted individuals dating or married to Greeks in learning their partners’ language.
  • Enthusiasts and Travelers: I’ve supported travelers, mythology aficionados, and classics enthusiasts in taking ownership of their niche interests.

In each case, I empower initiative, provide guidance and support, prioritize students’ interests, and utilize their strengths to bridge their difficulties. My approach cultivates an independent connection to the language that extends beyond the classroom and study materials.

Do you have any specific teaching certifications?

I hold a BA in Greek Language from the University of Crete and am a certified teacher in Greece.

I have completed 400 hours of additional training in teaching Greek as a second/foreign language from the University of the Aegean.

Currently, I am enrolled in a 9-month training program for teaching Greek as a target language at the Center for the Greek Language, the official institution for providing the State Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek.

What levels of Greek do you teach?

I teach all levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

Do you offer both online and in-person lessons?

No. Lessons are exclusively online.

Do you personalize lessons for each student?

Yes! I tailor lessons based on your individual needs, goals, and learning style to ensure you get the most out of each session. H/W and class workload are also customized.

Do you help with specific goals, like preparing for a trip or a certification exam?

Yes! I have extensive experience working with:

1. Greek Diaspora adults who want to reconnect with their language,
2. Individuals with Greek partners who want to practice conversational Greek,
3. Proficiency Exam Candidates who prep for the official national exam,
4. Undergrad/Graduate Students who prepare for College/University exams,
5. Mythology/Classics enthusiast

Let me know via the contact form what your specific goals are! Is it one of the above or something else?

What age groups do you teach?

I exclusively teach adults.

Is there a difference between Modern and Ancient Greek, and which one do you teach?

Yes, and both! Usually, non-Greek-speaking students are interested in Modern, and Greek-speaking students in Ancient Greek. I wouldn’t recommend mixing the 2 unless one of them is mastered. Reach out to book a consultation so we can determine which option is a better fit and discuss the pros and cons of studying each one.

What’s the difference between a consultation and a lesson?

A consultation is a one-time meeting to assess your needs and set goals — and most importantly: to get to know each other! A lesson is a regular instructional session focused on learning and practicing Greek.

How does a consultation look like?

I’m always excited to meet those interested in learning Greek!

During the consultation, we’ll discuss your learning goals, current proficiency, and any specific needs or preferences you have. I’ll review the details from your initial email and prepare targeted questions to guide our conversation. This helps us create a customized curriculum from the start.

The consultation also provides an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss any concerns. Think of it as ‘Lesson 0,’ where we cover the formalities of the class and establish a supportive learning environment.

How long is each session?

It depends. Each lesson is typically 50 minutes long, but they can range from 30 minutes to 2 hours or more. Factors affecting lesson length include (but are not limited to) meeting frequency, student level, goals, and type of practice.

What materials do I need for the lessons?

You will need a notebook, a pen, and of course a computer OR tablet/smartphone. I will provide additional materials as needed.

Do you provide any resources or materials for self-study?

Yes! I provide various resources and materials to help you study independently between lessons.

Will I need to purchase additional materials like books or apps?

No! I provide everything you need to achieve your goals. The materials I create for your personalized learning are included in the hourly rate. However, if you want to invest in additional educational materials, I support that decision. Using more tools can enhance your practice and progress. Just keep in mind that not all tools are of the same quality.

How do I prepare for my first lesson?

After we complete our first session (see: FAQ concerning “consultation”), I’ll guide you through everything else! Just bring your enthusiasm and questions!

Do you offer a free trial lesson?

I do not… However, a consultation will be much more beneficial in the long run, as it allows us to tailor a learning plan to your specific needs. Let me know who referred you or how you found me, and I’ll be happy to discuss available discounts.

Do I need to book a consultation first?

Yes! Booking a consultation allows us to assess your needs, set personalized goals, and — most importantly — get to know each other, which is key in creating a tailored learning plan.

How can I book a consultation?

Email me using this form. Choose the “Booking a Consultation” option from the drop-down menu.

In your first email, please include the following:

1. Your Name (and pronouns)
2. Learning Goals and Specific Areas of Interest/Focus
(e.g., Modern/Ancient Greek, conversational, exam prep, listening, mythology, literature, etc.)
3. Current Level of Greek Proficiency
(if you are not an absolute beginner, please describe your level in your own words)
4. Any Previous Experience with Greek
(if applicable)
5. Availability
(days and times for lessons or consultation)
6. General Location (or time zone)

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson. Without this notice, the scheduled time will be charged in full, as I would have otherwise scheduled another student during that slot.

If you provide more than 24 hours’ notice, we can easily reschedule the lesson at no extra charge. Please note that rescheduling is limited to a maximum of three times in a row; any additional rescheduling beyond this will result in the lost hours being charged in full.

In the rare event that I need to reschedule, I will give you at least 24 hours’ notice to arrange a new time. If I have to cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice and you are not interested in rescheduling, I will adjust the lost hour from the next month’s bill.

Please note that refunds are not available, but I’m always happy to discuss any concerns and find solutions that work for you.

How far in advance should I book my lessons?

It’s best to book at least a month in advance to secure your preferred time slot.

Can I record the lessons for later review?

Yes! As long as you ask for permission, you can record the lessons only for personal use and review.

Is there a registration fee?

No! There is no registration fee.

Are there any hidden fees?

No! There are no hidden fees. All costs will be clearly outlined before you start.

Are there any additional costs for materials?

No! All necessary materials are included in the lesson price.

How do you handle price changes?

I will notify you in advance of any price changes. Existing packages will be honored at the original rate.

What is your pricing structure?

My prices vary depending on the platform you use to book. This is due to different commission rates charged by specific teaching platforms. I offer discount and referral links for these platforms, but the best deal is to book directly with me.

My pricing includes:

  1. Hourly Rate: Time booked for lessons.
  2. Preparation Time: Time spent preparing before and between lessons.
  3. Personalized Materials: Creation of original, personalized educational (multimedia) materials.
  4. Feedback: Short form feedback through messages between lessons.
  5. Learning Coaching: Ongoing coaching and support.
  6. Commission Fees: Additional fees only applicable when booking through a third-party platform.

Feel free to reach out for specific rates or any further details!

Can I get a refund if I’m not satisfied with the lessons?

No. Unfortunately, refunds are not available (please review the cancellation and rescheduling policy). However, I’m always happy to hear and honor your feedback and accommodate your needs.

If you are a new student, I recommend booking a consultation first, where I can explain how to start with shorter or fewer lessons before committing to a monthly schedule, allowing you to ensure the quality of my work and test our compatibility.

Monthly trials can be easily paused and resumed with prior notice and clear communication. If you decide to completely drop out, please notify me in a timely manner before the next month’s bill is charged. I’m always here to support you and work through any changes.

Can I pay per lesson, or do I need to pay for a package?

You can choose to pay per lesson or for a monthly package. Paying monthly ensures that your preferred time slots are reserved exclusively for you, making scheduling consistent. It also helps streamline scheduling and availability. However, for new students who prefer not to commit immediately, paying per lesson is an available option. Just be sure to notify me in a timely manner if you can’t attend a scheduled lesson (please review the cancellation and rescheduling policy).

What payment methods do you accept?

Payment methods depend on how you book. If you use a third-party platform, please review their policies. If you book directly with me, the only available option is PayPal, as I am based in Greece.

What technology do I need for the lessons?

You will need a computer OR tablet/smartphone with a reliable internet connection, a webcam, and a microphone.

What platform do you use for online lessons?

I use various platforms for online lessons:

  • Third Party: Preply, with more to be announced.
  • Direct Booking: We can meet through WhatsApp, Messenger, Viber, Teams, or Discord, and more to be announced.

Additionally, I’m always available through email or messages between lessons and provide a variety of interactive, multimedia platforms for practice, including videos, quizzes, flashcards, and more.

Do you provide technical support for setting up online lessons?

Yes! I can assist you with setting up the necessary technology for our lessons by providing clear guidance and information. Just let me know what you need help with, and I’m happy to help!

How do you handle connectivity issues during a lesson?

If we experience connectivity issues, severe enough to impact the quality of the lesson, we will reschedule at no additional cost.
